Mastering Shopify Fraud Analysis

How to Ensure "Low Risk" Orders

Below is a comprehensive guide to navigating Shopify's fraud analysis system. By following these steps, you can help ensure your orders are flagged as "Low Risk" and avoid automated cancellations.

Understanding Shopify Risk Evaluation

Shopify evaluates every order by cross-referencing your provided information against past data to determine legitimacy. Orders are placed on a three-tier risk scale:

  • 🟢 Low Risk: Your order is safe and will likely process.

  • 🟡 Medium Risk: The order is under scrutiny and may be cancelled.

  • 🔴 High Risk: The order will almost certainly be auto-cancelled.

Shopify Cancel Detection

Here’s how Shopify detection works with info based on risk how they cancel orders

Low: card verification (cvv) is correct

Low: billing street address matches credit card registered address

Low: billing address zip or postal code matches the credit card registered address

Low: there was 1 payment attempt

Low: payment was made with 1 credit card Medium location of ip address used to placed the order is in a different state

Medium : some characteristics of this order are similar to fraudulent orders observed from previous orders

High: shipping address is 100miles from location of ip address

High: the billing address is listed as California but the order placed was in New York ⭐

High: a high risk internet connection (web proxy) was used to place the order (most common)

⭐ Shopify loves orders with history

The applies to alot of retail sites as well how their system detects

If you are experiencing constant cancellations on sites like DSM or UNDFTD, it means a specific component of your billing or shipping profile has been red-flagged.

How to Prevent Cancellations

Address "Jigging" Guidelines

The way you format your address is the most frequent cause of a "High Risk" flag. Follow these formatting rules strictly:

Recommended Formatting ✅

  • 1 Random Rd apt 1 (Address Line 1)

  • 1 Random Road

  • 1 Random Rd

  • 1 Divine23 Random Road St

Avoid These Formats ❌

  • 1 Random Rd S1

  • 1 Random Rd SH3S

  • SH3S 1 Random Rd

⚠️ Critical Note: Do not include extra strings of random characters (like SH3S). Exceptions include standard identifiers like apt, room, or door. Additionally, avoid using all capital letters in your address variations and avoid using 4-letter random strings, as these are currently being flagged.

Email Best Practices

Shopify's system is highly sensitive to email domains. Using a "catchall" email is a major red flag.

  • Use Trusted Providers: Stick to gmail.com, yahoo.com, hotmail.com, or aol.com.

  • Gmail Plus Trick: Using [email protected] is effective (e.g., [email protected]).

    • Tip: Avoid consecutive strings like +123 or +abc.

  • Avoid the Dot Trick: The Gmail "dot trick" (e.g., [email protected]) is currently being detected and will result in an auto-cancel.

Example of a "Low Risk" Profile

To maximize your success, structure your profile similar to the example below:

  • Address: 1 Random Road Street apt 1 OR 1 Divine23 Random Road St

  • Payment: Use a unique Virtual Credit Card (VCC) for each profile.
